Teeth-whitening 101: Whiten your teeth in 5 minutes for under $5!
Updated: Sep 2, 2019
Ever since I was a young lad (haha—the dramaticism), I’ve always low-key been obsessed with teeth. In the first half of my life, I had clean teeth but they were crooked. In 2014, I made the decision to pursue Invisalign braces and to this day, it is a decision I am so happy I made. Now I have the smile I always dreamed of. Still, would you believe me if I told you I have only been to the dentist one time in my thirty years, earth side? Lol Even my orthodontist that oversaw my Invisalign treatment was shocked. He cringed when he learned this BUT all he could do was compliment me on how clean my teeth were. HE even asked ME what was my trick!?!
I know all of my dentistry friends want to come for me! Hear me out, though. It’s not that I didn’t ever WANT to go to the dentist as a child. Trust me, I was raised in a family that really pride ourselves on having inherited the genes for naturally straight, white teeth. My mother was a STICKLER for cleanliness and fortunately, I grew up adopting the same attribute.
Nonetheless, health insurance was not as inclusive back then as it has grown to be over the years. A dentist plan was almost always extra money and almost always astronomical in pricing. So, we saw it as optional or a privilege. No worries though, my mama (a.k.a. the plug) put us on to a quick, cost-effective and practical way of keeping up with our teeth-cleaning routine.
It really is simple guys and it really does cost well under $5.
Here’s what you’ll need:
A toothbrush, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and your toothpaste of choice. Hydrogen peroxide can be found in your local pharmacy, Target, Walmart, etc in the first aid aisle for $1-2. Don’t fret though—if you read the bottle, hydrogen peroxide is also categorized as an oral antiseptic. This means that it has whitening/cleaning properties. It also has the ability to sooth your gums or any source of mouth irritation. In addition, baking soda can be found in the baking aisle of your local supermarket for $1-3. Baking soda also has cleaning and stain-removing properties. When you incorporate hydrogen peroxide and baking soda into your daily routine, IN CONJUNCTION with your toothpaste, I promise you, you will see almost instantaneous results.
So, how does it work?
First, you pour two cap-fulls of peroxide into a paper cup and pour it into your mouth. Swish and gargle it for about 1-2 minutes, tops. DO NOT SWALLOW IT! Spit it out and rinse. Next, you’ll brush your teeth and rinse as usual. Finally, you’ll take a little bit of baking soda and either pour a little into your hand (cupping your hand to catch the baking soda, of course) or you can pour it into a small cup. Wet your toothbrush and dab it into the baking soda that is in your hand or in the cup. You’ll notice it forms a paste on your toothbrush—THIS IS GOOD! Take your toothbrush with the baking soda paste and brush your teeth, continuously adding more baking soda, as needed for about 1-2 minutes. DON’T FORGET TO BRUSH YOUR TONGUE—spare us the bad breath! Lol Voila! That’s it! The whole ordeal takes 5-6 minutes, at best!
Realistically, I only get to do this 3-4 times a week these days but I still see a major difference each time I do it. Ideally, you’ll want to do this daily but as long as you’re doing it routinely, you should get the results you desire.
DISCLAIMER: I AM IN NO WAY SUGGESTING THIS METHOD IN PLACE OF GOING TO THE DENTIST.
Dentistry is important and there is a reason why dentists exist! This is just a good method to carry you over in between dentist appointments or while you are figuring our your health insurance situations.
Ultimately, please remember that the health of your teeth is also indicative of what you eat, how much water you drink, how often you floss, etc. All of these habits make for beautiful, white, HEALTHY teeth AND gums.
Now, GLOW-UP! =)
